Back-to-School Lunches

Back to school time is here and that means that it’s time to start the back to school supply shopping, lunch box shopping and meal planning. This year, I decided to include my kids in the planning and shopping, and it actually turned out to be a lot of fun. At the store I would give each kid two items off their list and it was a game to see who could find their items first and help each other when the other couldn’t find them. Lunch boxes, I’m still on the search for the perfect lunch box for each kid because nobody can really agree on the criteria. However, we sat down at the kitchen table the other day and talked about lunches, what they like, what they don’t and what they think they’d like to see in their lunches. My daughter wants color and fresh and lots of textures so we’re buying fun shaped sandwich cutters; butterflies and dinosaurs and hearts and flowers and I plan on getting a couple of the super fun shaped cold packs that I saw at the store the other day to keep her grapes and mini carrots and celery sticks and seasonal fruits and veggies cold. My 3 year old son: He wants food and more food. He goes to a two day a week pre-school but has informed me that he wants a lunch box lunch every day with lots of skewers and grapes and chips. I use coffee stirrers to skewer hot dog bites and grapes and cheese cubes as well as rolling up ham and turkey with american and cheddar slices, slicing them into rolls and securing them with the coffee stirrers and alternating grapes on them for fun to eat and fun to look at lunch treats.
